Howard Gets First Win Of The Season Over Alcorn, Sept 19, 2004
Landover, MD-Justin Brantley booted three field goals and the defense stood tall as Howard University defeated Alcorn State, 17-10 in the First Annual Prince George’s County Classic at Fedex Field. The win was the first of the season for the Bison (1-2) while the Braves (2-1), ranked Number 3 in the Sheridan Broadcasting Network (SBN) Black College poll, suffered their first defeat of the season and had a seven-game win streak snapped.
Brantley, a red-shirt freshman from Detroit, MI, converted on field goals of 39, 40 and 33 yards, making him a perfect 3-for-3 in his first attempts as a collegian.
Brantley also contributed another key play that will not show up big in the statistical column, but proved to be very crucial. The Braves’ dangerous return specialist Lonnie Teagle appeared on his way to a long return or perhaps a touchdown when Brantley, the last line of defense on coverage, made a sure tackle in the open field.
The Bison defense had its best all-around performance of the young season. The talented Braves entered the game averaging 27 points per game, but Howard limited its attack to 56 net rushing yards while forcing talented quarterback Donald Carrie into a 14-for-37 passing day, intercepting him twice and forcing him to fumble twice.
On the offensive side, Howard had the dubious distinction of having won a game in which the quarterback failed to complete a pass. Senior quarterback Marcos Moreno was 0 for 7 with two interceptions.
The Bison finally get to play at home on Saturday when they host Savannah State University in a 1 p.m. non-conference contest at Greene Stadium.
